Course Overview

The Intermediate level training, accredited by the Association of Family Therapy (AFT) has its emphasis on application to practice. It is both a consolidation of learning from the Foundation level training and preparation for the PG Dip / Masters level training, should trainees wish to proceed.

Our AFT accredited course aims to develop confident, collaborative practitioners who can work with families and professional networks. Trainees can develop their reflective practice; work with process and use of a self, as well as, a range of skills and techniques to enhance family interventions. The training develops skills in formulation and helping families identify their strengths, improve their decision making, problem solving and communication.

Study Requirements

Trainees complete three assignments, requiring:

300
hours of study
150
hours of independent study
90
hours of study in direct contact with course staff
60
hours of systemic practice

A strong emphasis is placed on reflective practice and the use of self, combined with a focus on workplace-based cases/scenarios to ensure new learning is relevant to practice. We use a range of teaching methods to help you achieve your full potential including lectures, seminars, experiential exercises; skills practice work, group work and self-supported study.

The combination of these learning processes will enable students to apply their skills and knowledge within whichever setting they find themselves and to widen their repertoire of interventions.

Eligibility

A relevant degree-level professional qualification in health or social care is required. Trainees must also have successfully completed a Foundation level training. It is essential that trainees are working professionally with families in order to complete the 60hrs of direct work that is part of successfully completing the course. Candidates will be interviewed as part of the selection process.

The course will be delivered in six, two-day blocks, usually Thursdays and Fridays.

This consists of three areas of study:

An introduction to systematic thinking about families
Students will have the opportunity to test and explore a range of theoretical frameworks and applying them to their practice.
Developing a Systemic Stance
Students are introduced to the concept of the systemic stance which requires an attitude towards knowledge and ideas that is irreverent (both critical and respectful).

Professional Systems, Self and Society
