SUMMARY:Digital family life skills for 21st century clinicians
DESCRIPTION:Innovation Workshop \nWith the greatly increased use of social media by young people\, concern is growing over it’s impact on many aspects of their mental health as well as family life in general. \nThis innovative workshop presents mental health professionals with an opportunity to develop new templates for responding effectively to the unprecedented challenges they now face. \nDigital Family Life Skills for 21st Century Families and Clinicians. \nParticipant\, CAHMS\, Aldershot: “The idea of using curiosity\, context and a relational focus to address these issues has shifted my thinking from a fearful position to a more curious and hopeful one.” \nParticipant\, NHS\, Dorset: “This hugely useful workshop increased my confidence in addressing digital media challenges and how I might approach this professionally and personally.” \nDo you feel that your training and experience has not equipped you to deal with clinical issues which stem from our clients’ digital social worlds? \nDoes it often seem as if the familiar boundaries which defined our clients’ private and public social worlds (and our relationship to them) are being undermined? \nAre you losing confidence in your own sense of professional agency and your ability to work with this new generation of digitally sponsored problems\, issues\, contexts and dilemmas? \nThis is hardly surprising given that digital technologies are now disrupting family life in terms of: \n\nThe transitions between developmental stages\nThe roles\, relationships and expectations between family members\nFundamental issues about authority\, identity and relations to peer group norms and pressures\n\nThis workshop is an opportunity for clinicians and mental health professionals to renegotiate their relationship to the complex and ubiquitous digital technologies that so often bewilder our professional lives as well as those of our clients. \nWorkshop Goals \n\nTo empower participants to make the shift from a position of fear and unsafe uncertainty to a position of curiosity and safe uncertainty.\nTo help participants to replace feelings of impotence or of being de-skilled with a renewed sense of agency and confidence when dealing with digital media related issues.\nTo develop their critical discernment and ability to make informed judgements about issues such as internet addiction\, sexting\, grooming\, cyberbullying and the way that these are covered in the media.\nTo enable them to see beyond the medical/addiction model to relational\, cultural\, socio-technical and political ways of framing the issues.\nTo understand the clinical implications of research in this area and access a diverse range of age and stage issue appropriate clinical interventions and innovations.\nTo develop their own maps of key digital life stages\, rites of passage and parenting styles.\nTo help participants discern and identify chronic\, acute and at-risk clients and families.\nTo work with a model that prioritises relationships and clinical wisdom rather than generationally specific technological expertise.\n\nThe workshop comprises up-to-date research presentations and facilitated exploration of their clinical implications\, curated videos\, group discussions\, experiential exercises\, case vignettes in addition to recommendations for clinical interventions. \nThe workshop can be tailored to one or two days and time can also be allocated to emerging clinical innovations such as emotional mapping and family social media policies as well guidance with regards to relevant online resources to aid further study. \nAbout the workshop designer-facilitators: \nDr. Reenee Singh is the Founding Director of the London Intercultural Couples Centre and the co-director of the Tavistock Family Therapy and Systemic Research Centre. SUMMARY:Scripts Myths and Narratives
DESCRIPTION:Stories\, Scripts and Narratives: \n\nThis training will consider how we can use stories\, scripts and narratives in our work with individuals and families.  We hope that we will create an engaging experience and that you will leave with new ideas and ways of thinking that will benefit your practice.  There will be opportunities to explore how you can use these ideas in your own context. \nEinstein: \nMany stories: one man. \nWhy are stories important? \nWhat are the stories you tell about yourself?  What are the stories that others tell about you? Stories are powerful and they can shape how we see ourselves and how others see us.  This can influence how we make meaning of our experiences and how we relate to others. \nSome of the stories we tell ourselves can be supportive\, kind and empowering\, and some can be critical or constraining. \nWe will look at the influence of stories in the lives of the people we work with and work alongside them to find new or different meanings. \nStories can become a script and we know from our own experience as well as the experiences of the people we work with that patterns or “scripts” can pass from one generation to the next.  Some scripts might be helpful\, while others might be problematic for us\, even damaging. \nWe can use this concept in our work to reflect on the scripts that people bring to relationships and how this influences them.  Can scripts change?  Can they be influenced in order to help people overcome challenges?  How can we re-write a script with those we want to support? \nOften\, people become overwhelmed by problems and can believe that they themselves are the problem:  “I am depressed..”  “I am an alcoholic…”  People may be defined by problems: “It is a chaotic family”. \nWe can use techniques from narrative therapy which help us separate people from their problems.  These techniques can offer different perspectives which can bring alternative meaning and new possibilities.  This might mean a changed and more positive future. \nOur story is that by thinking about the stories and scripts that shape our lives and our relationships\, we can help individuals and families to challenge what they do not find helpful and build on what they value.  This can help people adapt to challenges that they are facing.  We hope that the ending of this chapter will bring increased flexibility and a new story for the future.

SUMMARY:Risk\, Responsibility and Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Dr Arlene Vetere is an internationally renown clinical psychologist and professor of family therapy and systemic practice at VID Specialized University\, Oslo\, Norway. She is a registered systemic supervisor and co-director of Reading Safer Families. \n6th March: Risk\, Responsibility and Collaboration: \nThis workshop will present the development of a systemic safety methodology for safe therapeutic practice with couples and families where violence is of concern. \nIn this workshop\, Arlene focuses on how a safety methodology developed in a specialist service can be adapted for use in mainstream mental health and therapeutic services\, across the life span. The aim is to ensure that family violence is seen and understood within mainstream psychotherapeutic services\, that family members are helped to stop the violence\, and where possible\, are helped to manage the psychological consequences of living with violence. The Safer Families Project will be described and there will be a particular emphasis on how this approach can be adapted for mainstream therapeutic services. In particular\, this safety methodology has clear implications for supervision practice and points to the need for therapy practice supervisors to be alert to\, and active around\, issues of safety\, for all participants. \nArlene is the author of: \n\nSammut Scerri\, C\, Vetere\, A\, Abela A\, Cooper J (2017) Intervening After Violence: Therapy for Couples and Families\, Springer.\nVetere\, A and Sheehan\, S (2017) (eds) Supervision of Family Therapy and Systemic Practice. SUMMARY:Non-Violent Resistance Training Day with Dr Peter Jakob
DESCRIPTION:NON VIOLENT RESISTANCE \nDR PETER JAKOB \nNon Violent Resistance aims to change family relationships\, when children and young people show violent\, aggressive or self-destructive behaviour.  For many of these families there are multiple stresses and high levels of trauma. NVR core principles are applied to help family members develop a sense of safety within the larger system\, so that the nuclear family itself can become a safe and supportive recovery environment. \nThis day long event will introduce participants to the core principles of NVR\, as well as giving them an insight into the trauma-focused model that has been developed by Dr Peter Jakob\, for using nonviolence in transforming relationships within the larger system around the family\, helping parents process their own traumatic experience\, and re-kindling the “caring dialogue” between parent and child. \nRaising parental presence is the main therapeutic factor of the approach. Young people’s aggressive behaviours usually have a controlling function\, and parents learn to accommodate their child\, giving in to unreasonable demands or acting submissively. Alternating with such responses\, they may at times engage in symmetrical escalation\, with parent and child each attempting to control the other. \nNVR helps parents reverse loss of presence by introducing positive direct action methods for challenging harmful behaviour in non-punitive ways; enabling them to retrieve parental agency and develop socially authorized authority. \nThis event has been funded by the Scottish Government.
